The Thiaki Rainforest Restoration Project is returning long-cleared pasture to rainforest, in the wet tropics region
of Far North Queensland. The project is a world-class demonstration site involving several universities. The project
aims to preserve precious species such as the Lumholtz tree-kangaroo, ringtail possums and all 13 native bird
species including the cassowary and golden bowerbird, as well as filtering run-off to the Great Barrier Reef.
By introducing more wind farms across Asia, Winds of Change aims to reduce air pollutants associated with fossil
fuels, improve electricity availability and reduce the occurrence of blackouts, particularly in rural areas. It also
increases local employment and boosts local economies and village services. Watch the video here.
In the absence of fire management by Aboriginal Traditional Landowners, Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory
is prone to extreme, devastating wildfires that damage the landscape including rock art galleries, cultural
sites and biodiversity. ALFA – Arnhem Land Fire Abatement is an Aboriginal owned, not-for profit carbon farming
business, that supports Aboriginal Traditional Owners and rangers to utilise customary fire knowledge and skills in
tandem with contemporary technology to accomplish highly sophisticated landscape scale fire management.
Protecting millions of hectares of native forests, helping to secure wildlife habitats and supporting local
communities through projects on the ground in South America, Oceania and Africa. In Peru, the protection of
large expanses of rainforest is preventing the release of millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
The vast majority of rural populations across Africa, Asia and South America cook on highly inefficient, traditional
three-stone fires, often located inside poorly-ventilated kitchens causing severe household air pollution and chronic
respiratory, heart and eye disease. These offset projects support the community to build clean, efficient stoves
that slow down the combustion of wood, significantly improving indoor air quality and reducing health risks.
We know there’s more we can do to help everyone live more sustainably. We’re building products and investing in programs and initiatives that support a greener future.
Carbon Offsetting
The production of electricity from non-renewable sources and the burning of fuel releases greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases block heat from escaping Earth’s atmosphere which leads to increased temperatures and changes in climate.
Carbon offsetting allows individuals and businesses to reduce their environmental impact. By purchasing independently verified carbon offsets, customers support environmental projects that remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere (such as planting trees) or prevent future emissions from occurring (such as replacing electricity from a coal-fired power station with electricity from renewable sources such as wind or solar). One unit of carbon offset represents one metric tonne of greenhouse gas emissions reduced or removed from the atmosphere.

Qantas only purchases carbon offsets from projects that are verified at the highest international standards. Projects are verified by an independent third-party like the Verified Carbon Standard Program and the Gold Standard who ensure each project meets strict criteria to deliver measurable and permanent emissions reductions additional to a business-as-usual scenario.
Offset your Home and Car is one of the first products of its kind in the world. Backed by rigorous emissions calculations and delivered in partnership with Asia Pacific’s most experienced carbon offset provider TEM, Offset your Home and Car empowers individuals to make a real, meaningful and long lasting contribution to climate action.
Energy-related emissions form the lion’s share of activities offset by Offset your Home and Car and vary significantly across Australia’s states and territories, based on the primary source of generation. For instance, electricity in Victoria is generated predominantly from coal which has a higher emissions profile when compared to, for example, Tasmania where electricity generation is dominated by hydro power. Therefore, the cost to offset the equivalent household emissions will be more expensive in Victoria on account of the higher number of offset credits required.
